At times it is unavoidable that Network Rail infrastructure improvement works may affect some of our services, meaning alterations to the scheduled timetables.

Amended late night midweek service between Cardiff Central and Rhymney from Monday 20 until Friday 24 August

Engineering work is taking place between Cardiff Central and Rhymney each night from 23:05, closing some lines.

The following late night trains will be replaced by a bus from Cardiff Central:

  • 22:35 Cardiff Central to Rhymney

Buses replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport until 16:45 on Sunday 26 August

Engineering work is taking place between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport, closing lines until 16:45.

Arriva Trains Wales:

Train services will be diverted via Styal, and will not call at Stockport. Customers travelling to / from Stockport should use alternative services.

CrossCountry:

Trains will be diverted between Manchester Piccadilly and Stafford, not calling at Stockport, Macclesfield or Stoke-on-Trent. Replacement buses will operate between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent. Trains run by other operators will run between Stockport, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent.

East Midlands Trains:

Trains will be diverted between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield, not calling at Stockport. Replacement buses will run between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport.

Northern:

Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe via Stockport will be diverted and not call at Levenshulme, Heaton Chapel, Stockport, Cheadle Hulme and Handforth. Buses will operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow calling at Levenshulme, Heaton Chapel, Stockport, Cheadle Hulme and Handforth.

Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-on-Trent will not run. Buses will operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-on-Trent.

Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Buxton will start from Hazel Grove, buses replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Hazel Grove.

Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester will start from Altrincham, buses replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Altrincham.

TransPennine Express:

Until 1645, services between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield will be diverted and will not call at Stockport.

Customers travelling to / from Stockport are advised to travel via and change at Manchester Piccadilly for replacement bus services (provided by other operators).

Virgin Trains:

It is not yet known how Virgin Trains will be affected by these engineering works.

The following morning, the 04:53 Machynlleth to Aberystwyth and the 05:30 Aberystwyth to Birmingham International will both be replaced by buses between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth.

The 00:32 Manchester to Chester will not run, a replacement bus service will be in operation.

An amended service will operate at Manchester Victoria, Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly all weekend.

Arriva Trains Wales:

Trains will be diverted between Manchester Piccadilly and Warrington Bank Quay. Buses will replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Warrington Bank Quay NOT calling at Manchester Oxford Road.

Northern:

Buses will replace trains between Manchester Oxford Road and Newton-le-Willows.

Additionally, trains through Bolton are also being amended. More details can be found here.

TransPennine Express:

Most trains between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh will be replaced by buses between Manchester Airport and Preston. These buses will call at Manchester Piccadilly. Please allow for an extended journey time of up to 60 minutes.

Trains between York / Scarborough / Newcastle and Liverpool Lime Street will only run between York / Scarborough / Newcastle and Manchester Victoria.

Customers for stations between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street should use alternative services. Customers for Liverpool should travel via Manchester Piccadilly on alternative services.

Additionally:

  • The 05:43 Middlesbrough to Liverpool Lime Street service will terminate at Manchester Victoria.
  • The 05:55 and 06:25 Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street services will not run.
  • The 21:19 Manchester Airport to Manchester Piccadilly service will not run.
  • On Saturday, the 06:29 Lancaster to Manchester Airport service will not run.
  • On Saturday, the 18:12 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport service will be diverted after Preston and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly.
  • On Sunday, the 19:00 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport service will divert after Preston and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly.

  • 22:42 Bridgend to Cardiff Central is diverted via and calling at Pontyclun. A replacement bus will run between Bridgend and Cardiff Central calling at all stations via Barry.
  • 23:14 Radyr to Barry Island is replaced by a bus between Cardiff Central and Barry Island.
  • 23:26 Penarth to Cardiff Central is replaced by a bus throughout. 
  • 22:15 Maesteg to Gloucester is replaced by a bus between Newport and Gloucester
  • 23:00 Cheltenham Spa to Cardiff Central is replaced by a bus throughout.

 

Tuesday to Friday

Customers for stations between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street should use alternative services. Customers for Liverpool should travel via Manchester Piccadilly on alternative services.

Additionally:

  • On Saturday, the 06:29 Lancaster to Manchester Airport service will not run.
  • On Saturday, the 08:10 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service will start from Manchester Piccadilly at 07:42.
  • On Saturday, the 18:12 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport service will be diverted after Preston and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly.
  • On Sunday, the 09:05 Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central service will start from Manchester Piccadilly at 08:40.
  • On Sunday, the 19:14 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport service will divert after Preston and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly.

Arriva Trains Wales:

Buses will replace trains between Crewe and Chester. Long distance services will be diverted to run on alternative lines.

Virgin Trains:

An amended timetable will be in operation, with the following trains running between London Euston and Crewe only:

  • 10:55 Holyhead to London Euston.
  • 11:28 Chester to London Euston.
  • 15:08 London Euston to Chester.
  • 16:08 London Euston to Chester.
  • 17:35 Chester to London Euston
  • 18:35 Chester to London Euston.

Other services between London Euston / Crewe and Chester / Holyhead will be diverted to run via an alternative route between Crewe and Chester, extending journey times. These trains will be retimed, and may leave stations earlier or later than usual.

The 22:52 Birmingham New Street to Holyhead service will terminate at Crewe, with replacement buses running between Crewe and Chester. Customers for stations between Chester and Holyhead should use earlier services.

Tuesday to Friday:

The 04:22 Chester to Birmingham New Street service will start from Crewe, a replacement bus will run between Chester and Crewe.

Monday to Thursday:

The 21:55 Cardiff Central to Crewe service will be diverted to run via Wrexham and Chester, extending journey times. A replacement bus will run between Shrewsbury and Crewe via Nantwich, calling at all booked stations.

Tuesday to Friday:

The 04:49 Crewe to Milford Haven service will start from Chester at 04:44, and will run via Wrexham Central. Customers from Crewe should use alternative rail services.

As a result, the following trains will be amended:

Monday to Thursday:

  • The 19:34 Cardiff Central to Holyhead and 21:36 Crewe to Holyhead services will terminate at Llandudno Junction. Replacement buses will run between Llandudno Junction to Holyhead.
  • The 22:52 Birmingham New Street to Holyhead service will terminate at Chester. A replacement bus will run from Chester to Holyhead.

Tuesday to Friday:

  • The 04:25 Holyhead to Cardiff Central service will start from Llandudno Junction. Customers from Holyhead and Bangor should travel on the 04:48 Holyhead to London Euston service (calling at Bangor at 05:15), changing at Chester to join the 04:25 Holyhead to Cardiff Central service.

Engineering work is taking place overnight between Port Talbot and Swansea, and also between Swansea and Llanelli, closing lines each night from Monday evening until Friday morning.

As a result, the following trains will be amended:

  • The 18:32 Manchester Piccadilly to Carmarthen is diverted between Port Talbot and Llanelli, and will arrive later than usual at Carmarthen.
  • The 19:30 Manchester Piccadilly to Fishguard Harbour is diverted, and will not call at stations between Neath and Llanelli. A replacement bus will run via these stations.
  • The 22:14 Fishguard Harbour to Swansea service will terminate at Llanelli. A replacement bus will run from Llanelli to Swansea.
  • The 00:15 Swansea to Carmarthen service will start from Llanelli at 00:01, and will run earlier to Carmarthen. A replacement bus will run from Swansea to Carmarthen.
  • The 03:03 Carmarthen to Swansea service will be replaced by a bus (please note this will not connect with the usual Swansea to London Paddington service, the next connection is the 04:58 Swansea to London Paddington service).
  • The 04:53 Carmarthen to Llandovery will depart earlier than usual at 04:51.
  • The 05:03 Carmarthen to Manchester Piccadilly service will start earlier from Carmarthen at 04:59.
  • The 05:45 Swansea to Pembroke Dock service starts from Llanelli at 06:05. An earlier bus service will run from Swansea to Llanelli.
  • The 06:04 Swansea to Crewe service will start from Llanelli at 06:25. An earlier bus service will run from Swansea to Llanelli.

Engineering work is taking place each evening from Monday to Friday between Crewe and Chester, closing all lines.

The following alterations will be in place between Monday and Thursday:

  • 21:17 Cardiff Central - Chester will terminate at Shrewsbury. Passengers should then use the 23:31 Shrewsbury to Crewe to connect with replacement road transport on to Chester
  • 22:52 Birmingham New Street - Holyhead will terminate at Crewe. Replacement road transport will then run to Chester where passengers can then connect with the 00:40 train service to Holyhead.
  • 23:30 Crewe - Chester service will run earlier at 23:00. Passengers unable to make this should use replacement road transport between these stations.

 

The following alterations will be in place between Tuesday and Friday:

  • 04:22 Chester - Birmingham New Street will start at Crewe at 04:59. Passengers should use road transport from Chester to connect with this service.
  • 04:55 Chester - Crewe will NOT run. Passengers are advised to travel on the 04:38 Llandudno Junction - Crewe service.
